Why do we need text mining centres for the Life Science domain and how could they support us?

The role of different text mining centres in the Life Science domain and their main duties and responsibilities will be presented in short overview talks by speakers from NaCTeM, the USA, Japan and also from the German Text Mining initiative "BioTeM".

In the following panel discussion we would like to discuss if the text mining centres fulfil their tasks and what should be the main duties and responsibilities of such text mining centres (some topics are listed below). We invited also representatives from pharmaceutical industry and from the application side to include their point of views in the discussion about required method developments especially for the Life Science domain.

Topics to be discussed:

• What about networking of different centres and task sharing?
• Which tasks and development are needed for the text mining community (also from biomedical side) to develop good tools for the biomedical domain?
• Which tools should be developed from the text mining community to support NLP applications in life-sciences, what is needed from the application side?
